Fiber network for businesses

Fiber networks – specialist expertise in practice

KM Telecom delivers fiber solutions and fiber to companies in projects where high demands are placed on quality, precision and documentation.

With more than 20 years of experience, we work as a specialized fiber contractor in both smaller and complex installations - with a focus on correct execution and solutions that work in practice.

We work with fiber infrastructure as an independent discipline and are involved in projects where fiber constitutes a critical part of the overall infrastructure.

“One supplier for your entire fiber solution. We provide stable, lightning-fast and future-proof fiber networks.”

Fiber skills and services

We cover the entire spectrum of fiber and handle all key disciplines as an integrated part of the project:

  • Fiber design and fiber network construction
  • Fiber installation of fiber cables, blown fiber and pipes
  • Fiber splicing, connectorization and termination
  • Delivery of complete fiber infrastructure, including ODFs, racks, fiber cables and other components
  • Testing, measurement and documentation
  • Troubleshooting, fiber service and extensions

All tasks are carried out by certified fiber technicians and with professional installation and testing equipment, so that the solution meets the requirements of both project and operation.

Precision, quality and responsibility – all the way

We take responsibility for the entire fiber delivery and work in a structured manner from design to delivery.

In practice, we often act as a specialized fiber contractor for the electrical installer, where we independently handle the fiber installation and the fiber part of the project and ensure that the delivery fits into the overall contract.

We deliver the fiber solution complete, tested and documented, so it can be delivered directly for operation - without any extra work for you.
The result is a reliable fiber infrastructure with high stability and a structure that can be expanded and further developed as needed - without compromise.

Frequently asked questions about fiber networks (FAQ)

What does KM Telecom do when we talk about fiber?

We build and document the entire fiber network in the building, from FTTO to backbone. This covers fiber design and network construction, installation of fiber cables, blown fiber and pipes, splicing, connectorization and termination, as well as testing, measurement and documentation. We provide the complete infrastructure, including ODFs, racks, cables and components. The internet connection itself is provided by an operator, and we advise on the choice and take the dialogue with the operator on your behalf.

When should we choose fiber over copper internally?

Fiber is chosen where copper is not sufficient or suitable:

  • Distances over 100 meters, which is the limit for Cat 6A.
  • Between buildings, where fiber also eliminates the risk of potential differences and damage from lightning strikes because no current flows in a fiber cable.
  • Backbone between floors and intersections, where traffic from many connectors must be collected.
  • Environments with high electrical noise, for example with large motors and frequency converters.

Outside workplaces and access points, copper is usually the right choice because the power can follow the cable (PoE). The alternative is FTTO, where the fiber is routed all the way to a small switch in the office, and only the last few meters are copper. This results in fewer cross-sections and less filled shafts.

Single-mode or multi-mode fiber?

  • Single-mode (OS2): thin core and long range. The cable is cheap, the optics at the ends are more expensive. Choose between buildings and where there must be room for future speeds.
  • Multi-mode (OM4 and OM5): thicker core and shorter reach. The cable is more expensive, the optics are cheaper. Typically used internally in server rooms and on short backbone runs.

We increasingly recommend OS2 for anything but the shortest runs because the cable infrastructure needs to outlast the equipment at each end.

What is blown fiber and when do you use it?

With blown fiber, we place empty pipes in the routing paths and blow the fiber in with compressed air afterwards. The advantage is that the pipes are the expensive and difficult part to establish, while the fiber can be replaced or expanded later without breaking up the building again. It is therefore obvious in new construction and renovation, where you know that the need is growing, but not exactly how much.

How does the operator's fiber get into the server room?

The operator brings the fiber into the building to an agreed point, the demarcation point, and that's where their responsibility ends. From there, it's up to us: pipes and conduits, entry cables, and termination to the server room or junction box. We plan it together with the rest of the cabling so that the work doesn't have to be redone when the PDS and Wi-Fi are installed.

How is the fiber terminated in the junction box?

The fiber is routed to the junction box and terminated in an ODF, i.e. the fiber panel where all fibers are assembled and labeled. Termination is done by splicing pre-assembled pigtails, which gives lower losses and more consistent results than connectors mounted on site. From there, patches are made to switches with short fiber cables, so that the installed cable does not have to be touched when the equipment is changed.

How do you measure and document the fiber network?

Each fiber is measured in both directions. We measure the total loss over the length of the path and use OTDR measurement to see where the loss is, i.e. whether it is a splice, a connector or a too sharp bend. You will receive a report per fiber with measurement results, lengths and an overview of the cross fields, so that the system can be taken over directly into operation. It is the same documentation principle as on a PDS.

What certifications do your fiber technicians have?

Our fiber technicians are certified by the manufacturers whose systems we install, including CommScope. The certification is not just a piece of paper. It is what gives us access to issue the manufacturer's system and product warranty on the finished system. That's why we work and document according to the manufacturer's instructions and measurement values, not according to our own tolerances.

Can we have redundancy internally in the building?

Yes. We install two physically separate routing paths between the intersections so that they do not share a cable tray, shaft or conduit. If one path fails, for example during a renovation or by accident with other manual work, traffic continues on the other. Redundancy must be planned early because routing paths are what are difficult to change afterwards.
