The construction site of the future

The construction site of the future – one digital solution for management, documentation and sustainability

Most digital solutions for the construction industry focus on one area – typically energy. But the challenges of the construction site are rarely just about one thing. It's about operations, resources, fuel, indoor climate, moisture, use, documentation and increasing demands for sustainability, DGNB and BR25 A5.

With KM Telecom you get a complete digital construction site based on the ConneX platform, which makes the construction site visible and controllable across functions. Energy is one part. Diesel, humidity, indoor climate, people counting, safety and construction site documentation are others.

When data is collected uniformly, it becomes possible to manage the construction site more precisely and work systematically with optimization.

The solution creates value both in everyday life on the construction site and at management level, where projects can be compared, requirements for DGNB and sustainability are documented, and improvements are implemented from project to project.

The result is a digital construction site that saves money, reduces waste and makes the construction process more manageable. Our customers typically experience savings of 10–15% just by establishing an overview and adjusting behavior – before investing in further initiatives.

The construction site of the future is not just about measuring. It is about creating an overview, reducing waste and making the construction process more manageable – as one of the digital solutions for the construction industry that really makes a difference.

Get started quickly – with data you already have
It is not necessary to start with a full sensor setup on the construction site. The ConneX platform can pull energy data directly from your energy company and present it in clear dashboards and reports that provide a superior overview of consumption, development and deviations – without a large investment or installation. It provides an actionable basis for documenting construction site and sustainability from day one, and at the same time serves as documented evidence of the ROI of your optimizations.
As needs grow, the digital construction site can be expanded with meters, sensors and control functions at the pace that suits the project.

BR25 A5 – new requirements require documentation from the construction site
BR25 A5 directly requires documentation of resource consumption in the construction process – including energy, fuel and materials. This means that the construction site no longer only has to be operated efficiently, but also documented systematically. The ConneX platform makes it possible to meet the BR25 A5 requirements as a natural part of daily operations – with automatic data collection, reporting and traceability, without additional manual calculations. Combined with DGNB requirements and increasing expectations for sustainability, documentation of the construction site becomes a competitive parameter, not just an obligation.

“Build with precision and minimal environmental impact.”

Typical measurement points on the digital construction site

The construction site of the future requires insight across multiple areas. With KM Telecom you get a comprehensive solution that measures, documents and creates action – not only on energy, but on operations, resources, fuel, waste and requirements for
sustainability.

The solution may include, among other things:

    • Energy measurement – divided into sheds, cranes, lighting, production and temporary installations. Provides insight into where energy drives costs and where optimization has an effect
    • Diesel tank management – full insight into refueling, level and consumption. Reduces waste and creates documentation of fuel data
    • Water consumption – document consumption, detect leaks early and control water access via SMS or time control so that water is only used when necessary
    • API integrations – possibility to collect data from energy suppliers, waste and other systems, so that the construction site's most important signals are seen together
    • Noise and vibration measurements – professional documentation of environmental impact for authorities, neighbors and project requirements
    • Weather station – local measurements of temperature, wind and precipitation, which provide better planning and construction site documentation
    • Headcount – precise overview of activity on the construction site. Supports reporting, planning and safety
    • Video-based security – supports the correct use of protective equipment and contributes to reducing risk, incidents and documentation needs

What is crucial is not the individual measurement point, but that data is collected uniformly and can be used actively in operations, documentation and decisions across projects.

Smart control features
In addition to measurement, it provides
digital construction site possibility to control central functions directly:

  • notifications – notification of deviations, errors or abnormal consumption
  • Remote – control lights, water and temporary installations via platform, SMS or time settings
  • Automation – fixed routines for lighting, heating, pumps and equipment reduce waste without extra man-hours
  • Access everywhere – real-time data and management available via dashboard, regardless of location

The control functions move the construction site from reactive operation to proactive management.

Moisture measurement – managing time, risk and quality

Moisture is one of the biggest uncertainties in the construction process. Without accurate insight, drying is often based on assumptions, which can lead to delays, waiting times and the risk of errors.

With precise moisture measurement from KM Telecom, drying is documented and controllable as an integrated part of the digital construction siteThis makes it possible to plan the next work step on a safe basis and reduce unnecessary stops in the construction process.

This gives you the opportunity to:

  • Plan drying and next steps more precisely
  • Reduce waiting time and risk of delays
  • Prevent moisture damage before it occurs
  • Document the construction process for the client and consultants
  • Support requirements in DGNB and BR25 construction process A5

Moisture measurement is one of the areas where data-driven management creates the greatest impact. When moisture becomes visible, the construction process becomes more predictable.

Reporting that supports sustainability, DGNB and BR25 A5

When data is collected consistently across construction sites, reporting becomes not a manual task, but a natural output from the ConneX platform. Construction site documentation is done automatically – without time-consuming calculations.
KM Telecom makes construction site data available in a format that suits different roles:

Why customers choose KM Telecom for the digital construction site

Most digital solutions for the construction industry solve one problem at a time. Energy in one place, documentation in another, operational overview in a third. This creates more systems, more manual work and less coherence.
KM Telecom collects the most important signals from the construction site in one platform. Energy, diesel, humidity, indoor climate, activity and construction site documentation are collected uniformly and can be used directly in operations, reporting and decisions.

One platform instead of multiple point solutions
Instead of separate systems for energy, diesel, moisture and documentation, the ConneX platform brings everything together in one overview. This results in less manual work and better coherence.
Sustainability and DGNB – documented, not just communicated
The requirements for sustainability, DGNB and BR25 A5 are increasing. With automatic documentation from the ConneX platform, you can meet the requirements as a natural part of your operations - without additional calculations.

Scalable across projects
The solution can be implemented quickly and expanded with new measurement points as needed. When data is collected consistently, projects can be compared and improvements can be implemented systematically from site to site.

The result:
Lower costs, stronger management, better documentation of the construction site and higher quality – while strengthening the company's sustainability, DGNB profile and competitiveness. KM Telecom makes the construction site controllable, documentable and ready for the demands of the future.

Frequently asked questions about the construction site of the future (FAQ)

What can we measure and control on a construction site?

The method is the same regardless of what needs to be followed: wireless LoRaWAN sensors for what needs to be measured physically, and APIs for what already exists as data somewhere else.

  • LoRaWAN sensors: energy consumption divided into sheds, cranes, site lighting and construction power, diesel consumption per tank, water consumption and flow, humidity and temperature in the room air during drying, and noise level.
  • APIs: waste data and figures from the other systems and suppliers on site.
  • Control: lighting, heating and pumps can be time-controlled or switched off outside working hours. Dehumidifiers and building heating can be switched off room by room when it is dry. The water supply can be shut off automatically if the flow exceeds the limit you have set.

Everything is collected in OakSystem. The value lies in having the figures across systems and suppliers instead of in five portals, and that reports for the developer and authorities can be drawn from there directly.

Does the solution require access to our or the main contractor's IT network?

No. The sensors transmit to their own collection units (gateways) on a wireless network with long range and very low power consumption (LoRaWAN), and from there on their own 4G or 5G subscription, completely separate from the construction site and contractor's network. This makes the setup simple because nothing needs to be opened in your IT, and it keeps the solution running even if the site's network changes along the way.

Why should the construction flow be designed?

Because the division of panels and groups determines what can be measured afterwards. If shed power, cranes, site lighting and building power are on the same group, the consumption cannot be separated, no matter how good the meters are, and the documentation ends up as one total number with no action value. If the division is designed from the start, the meters are correctly located from day one, the panels are dimensioned for the actual need instead of a loose safety allowance, and you avoid retrofitting meters in the middle of construction. This gives both the best price for the installation and measurements that can be used for something.

How do we reduce energy consumption on site?

First by measuring: consumption is divided into shed power, cranes, site lighting and building power, so that idle consumption becomes visible. Then by controlling: lighting, heating and pumps can be time-controlled or switched off automatically outside working hours. The heaviest item is dehumidification and building heating during drying, and it is controlled on the same basis: when the humidity measurement shows that a room is dry, the system can be switched off instead of running for weeks. Idling at night and on weekends is the easiest item to eliminate because it does not require anyone to change habits.

How do we track diesel consumption?

With a Connected Fuel Unit on the tank, each individual refueling is recorded: which machine is refueled, how much, and which employee does it. Consumption can therefore be distributed by machine instead of being recorded as one single item. A level gauge can be purchased for the tank, so you are notified before it is empty, and GPS, so you always know where it is. If the level drops without a refueling being recorded, it can be seen immediately, and this is what reveals waste.

How do sensors help with drying and moisture protection?

Wireless sensors measure humidity and temperature in the room air and log the development continuously, room by room. This is where the big money lies: dehumidifiers and building heating are the heaviest consumers of the site, and they typically continue to run long after a room is dry, because no one can see when it has reached that point. With measurements, they can be switched off room by room, the next work step can be planned according to actual conditions, and you have documentation of the drying process for the client and consultant.

Can we avoid water damage on the site?

To a large extent, yes. We measure the flow in the water pipe, and limits are set for how much can flow and for how long at a time. If these are exceeded, for example by an open tap or a leak after working hours, the alarm is sent immediately and the supply can be shut off automatically. A break on Friday afternoon is thus stopped on site instead of being discovered on Monday morning. The flow measurement also provides the water consumption for documentation of the construction process.

How do we document the BR25 construction process and DGNB requirements?

We continuously deliver data on energy and diesel from OakSystem, and via API they are sent to the A4 platform that the customer uses. The client and consultant thus receive complete documentation on BR25 A4 and A5, without anyone having to collect figures manually along the way. DGNB can be supplemented with moisture measurement during drying, noise measurement on site and waste data retrieved via API, all of which are included in the assessment of the construction process. Because the figures are measured and not estimated, each individual figure can be traced back to a meter and a time, and that is exactly what an assessor and an auditor ask for.

Do you work with BR25 A4 suppliers?

Yes. We have a collaboration with Styr på, and together we cover the entire BR25 A4 and A5 documentation: they are responsible for A4, we deliver the ongoing measurement data to A5, and the exchange runs automatically via API. For you, this means that the documentation is delivered completely from one coherent setup, instead of having to be collected from two suppliers. If you want another A4 supplier, we also deliver data to them.

What does the contractor get in return?

Four places, in the order they weigh:

  • Drying out. Dehumidifiers and building heating are the heaviest consumers on the site, and they typically run longer than necessary. This costs both energy and construction time, and construction time is the more expensive of the two.
  • By focusing on consumption, contractors typically save 8 to 12%, mostly by eliminating idle time outside of work hours.
  • Recording each refueling eliminates waste and provides consumption that can be attributed to the right machine and the right contract.
  • Fewer manual rounds, readings and calculations, and documentation that is complete when construction is complete.

Added to this is what doesn't happen: water damage that is stopped on Friday instead of found on Monday, and daily fines that are not imposed because the drying out could be documented.
